I have a confession to make… we are completely disgusting people. No, it’s true. I knew it was bad, but when I saw these pictures – and after the laughter and tears subsided, I realized that we are totally and completely disgusting human beings. We adult pretty well at other things, but when it comes to picking up after ourselves or others, we are what you would call big ol’ failures.
When The Boyfriend and I moved in together, we had lots of duplicate appliances and kitchen gadgets – all of which have been donated to friends or charity at this point. But we still have A LOT of stuff and I do me A LOT. He’s a potter and a glass blower, so we have numerous beautiful hand crafted bowls and plates and glasses and… and… stuff. I’m a cooking fanatic, so we have numerous of everything else that’s remotely helpful in the kitchen. Plus we have limited counter space that is sometimes hijacked by mail and other junk that seems to never find a trash can or home. This has all resulted in a Kitchen Disaster! But it’s Spring… and that means Spring Cleaning… which means Kitchen Organization here we come!!
The other issue is the way this kitchen was built. Our cabinets are pretty deep – too deep honestly. I have no interest in getting down on my hands and knees to dig out a food processor or a skillet – and if you had seen the cropped out pictures of my floors, you would know why (I HATE mopping – but that’s a problem for a different day). This makes our kitchen organization very challenging – well that and we’re lazy.
From time to time, I will get it together and put everything away nice and neat. And that will last… um… oh, let’s see… about a day or so. Clearly I need some better solutions for this mess we call our kitchen and the inept people who use it. So I am challenging myself this spring to get my kitchen in order! Here is my plan of action:
Kitchen Organization Challenges and Goals
- Find a home for mail and other junk taking up valuable counter space
- Organize my storage containers and “other” cabinet (the nightmare cabinet)
- Organize my appliances to easy access what I use most often
- Organize our pots and pan cabinet so I can actually find something and put it away
- Organize our spice cabinets to free up some space
- Tackle the “cleaning” cabinet – ugh
- Figure out how to access bowls and casserole dishes without creating an avalanche
- Downsize our blended kitchenware more than we already have
Deadline: April 30, 2017
Okay, so you can stop laughing now. I’m really going to do it! I am! Starting now… well, okay maybe now. Hey I found a second can opener and it went right into the donation bag. That’s a start!
